who cried as if they had learned how from reading comics

"In all the years that she had been working in a hospitol, she had never ceased to be impressed by the aural variety of human suffering. There was a uniformity to the way people looked and smelled when they were ill, but the sounds that they made were always deeply personal. Some sniveled. Some boomed. Some screamed like infants. There were drama queeens who wailed actual words and sentaces- "oh Go-od, oh, noo" - and stoics who emitted only muffeled sneezes of sorrow.
